IWRP Leadership on "Engendering the R2P Doctrine"
Two University of Victoria law students, both IWRP 2005 summer interns at CFGS - Jennifer Bond (with support from the Vancouver office of Borden, Ladner, Gervais LLP) and Laurel Sherret (with support from Nancy's Very Own Foundation and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada) - have collaborated with IWRP co-director Marilou McPhedran in researching how to most effectively engender the emerging United Nations "Responsibility to Protect Doctrine" (R2P) by producing:
- A background strategy paper for the UN reform summit for Ambassador Allan Rock and senior staff at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations
- A full academic paper ("Sight for Sore Eyes: Gender Blindness in R2P") submitted for consideration to INSTRAW, the UN affiliated International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, in the new research-paper based series " New Voices, New Perspectives" (available through the UN website by October 1, 2005)
- A strategy paper (in development) for use by international NGO women's human rights advocates at the UN during the 10 Days of Action on Security Reform, October 21-31, 2005, and
- With guidance from Ambassador Rock, a version of the R2P strategy paper focused toward Canadian opinion makers (in development) to be presented at the CFGS invitational roundtable on Canada's new International Policy Statement in November 2005 at the University of Victoria.

INSTRAW Launches Searchable Directory
INSTRAW has just launched an online searchable directory of institutions that research gender, peace and security issues. Over one-hundred institutions from around the world are featured, including universities/colleges, research institutions, NGOs and UN organisations.
In addition to the directory, INSTRAW has compiled lists of gender, peace and security journals, databases and scholarships/fellowships. These tools are designed to serve as a resource for researchers, practitioners, policy makers and potential students.
Check out the directory and other resources at http://www.un-instraw.org/en/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1043 Place a link on your website to the directory. Send suggestions on how to improve the directory, such as additional institutions. Post this announcement regarding the directory on your website, or circulate it to relevant list-serves and people.
Through providing up-to-date information on gender, peace and security research institutions INSTRAW strives to facilitate networking, research, the exchange of materials and ideas, and to encourage students to pursue studies in this area.
