Eriel Tchekwie Deranger belongs to the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation
of Northern Alberta. Eriel is currently employed with TakingITGlobal
as the National Aboriginal Youth
Engagement Coordinator. In this position Eriel Deranger is paving the
way for Aboriginal youth visibility in Canada through the Creating Local
Connections Canada project. In this position Eriel has successfully
developed a Canadian Aboriginal portal in the TakingITGlobal online
community and developed and conducted various youth empowerment and
engagement workshops across Canada. Eriel was recently selected as one
of 9 recipients of the Walter & Duncan Gordon FoundationŐs Global Youth
Fellowship. Eriel is working on a investigative research paper on
global youth policy development and Indigenous youth inclusion and
fragmentation. In addition, Eriel was recently chosen as one of 24
global participants for training on Indigenous People in the
International System with the International Training Center for
Indigenous People in Greenland. Eriel also sits on the United Nations
International Indigenous Youth Caucus and various local community
boards. At 28, she has clearly demonstrated her skills as a promising
new leader in the movement for Indigenous rights, education and
visibility in Canada. Prior to working with TakingITGlobal Eriel worked
with Shout Magazine, FSIN as a Treaty Land Entitlement and Specific Land
Claims Researcher, KickinŐ Ash, Street Culture Kidz, and various
volunteer initiatives. Most of her work has been with various youth and
Aboriginal organizations on grass roots community issues. This has
allowed her to gain extensive knowledge of community resources and a
complex understanding of working across cultures to promote dialogue and
create necessary change.
