International CEDAW Impact Study and Network Seminar

The impact study on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in countries in each region of the UN system is gathering data using "online" conferencing and "face to face" meetings.

This pilot study is guided by international experts, with academic and grassroots perspectives, who have assisted in designing the impact study to include indicators which allow for meaningful comparisons among the countries in the study.  As well as identification of trends in the implementation (or lack thereof) of women's human rights and the nature of research supporting implementation will be explored.

An invitational CEDAW Impact seminar is to be held in New York City in January 1999. See Preliminary Agenda.

CEDAW Strategies Meeting (Canada)

Prior to the international seminar in New York in January 1999, a CEDAW Strategies Meeting was held at York University, Toronto, Canada and featured a discussion of Canadian data and development strategies for greater understanding and use of CEDAW in Canada. The International Women's Rights Project facilitated the Canadian Meeting on November 22, 23, 24 1998 on the occasion of a visit to York University by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson.

National correspondents in the Netherlands, the Ukraine and several other countries are gathering data and encouraging discussion on CEDAW meetings in their countries in November and December.

International Online Conference

On November 24, 1998, there will be a session at the Canadian meeting of York University which focus on the ways in which research in the social sciences and the humanities has been altered by women's quest for human rights. Following that meeting, an International Online conference will be held to discuss the summary from the November meeting.
