Afghan Women's Organization Ontario based organization established to assist Afghan women in their integration and adaptation to Canadian life; to encourage and motivate Afghan women to participate and contribute to life in Canada; and to develop a community support network for Afghan women. Contact: (416) 588-3585 WHRNET Web Site www.hrnet.org This site seems to be THE site for issues around women and fundamentalism, with a focus on Islamic fundamentalism in Afghanistan. It is a joint site of AWID, Women living under Muslim laws, WHRNet and Rights and Democracy and is fabulous. Maytree Foundation The Maytree Foundation is a private, Canadian charitable
foundation established in 1982. The Foundation is committed to reducing
poverty and inequality in Canada and to building strong civic communities.
The Foundation seeks to accomplish its objectives by identifying, supporting
and funding ideas, leaders, and leading organizations that have the capacity
to make change and advance the common good. The Canadian Coalition in
Support of Women in Afghanistan and the Afghan Women's Organization have
received very helpful funding and other forms of support from the Maytree
Foundation. International Women's Rights Project (IWRP) The International Women's Rights Project (IWRP)
was founded in 1998 to strengthen the capacity of women's NGOs and to
influence the implementation of international human rights standards,
to the benefit of women, through participatory research and evidence-based
advocacy. Women for Women Afghanistan W4Wafghan is a Canadian volunteer solidarity
group committed to raising awareness in Canada and internationally, to
the plight of women in Afghanistan. The overall goals of W4Wafghan projects
are to support the empowerment efforts of women and children in Afghanistan
and in the refugee camps in Pakistan; and to raise awareness to the human
right's violations. Revolutionary Association of Women in Afghanistan Established in Kabul in 1977, RAWA is an independent,
political organization of Afghan women in fighting for human rights and
for social justice in Afghanistan. Not advocating violence, RAWA campaigns
for Women's rights and provides education and health facilities and programs.
Most of its operations are based in refugee areas in Pakistan. Afghan Women's Mission The Afghan Women's Mission is a group of people
moved to action by the plight of Afghan refugees, especially the women
and children. The Afghan Women's Mission was founded in response to the
compelling need for adequate hospital facilities in Afghan refugee camps
in Pakistan. Our most immediate goal is to fund projects run by Afghan
women's organizations, which address the desperate health care needs of
the Afghan refugees. Women's Alliance for Peace and Human Rights in Afghanistan WAPHA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit and independent
organization founded by ZIEBA SHORISH-SHAMLEY, Ph. D. Its main goal is
to promote awareness of the tragic human rights situation in Afghanistan
and to advocate for social, political, economic and civil rights of the
Afghan women and girls in that country. Gross violation of basic human
rights continues to occur in Afghanistan. Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Support for Afghanistan PARSA is a small, non-government organization
(NGO) working directly with needy people of Kabul, Afghanistan, particularly
widows, who are on the streets begging and those who have "fallen through
the cracks" of the survey nets of the big NGOs. Its aim and goal are to
find work and/or develop skills so that these people can partly or wholly
support themselves and their families. It works in a direct personal way
to locate widows and to help them. It is now registered as a charitable
corporation in the State of Arizona, USA. Human Rights Watch A Human Rights Watch report "Humanity
Denied: Systematic Violations of Women's Rights in Afghanistan,"
documents a catastrophic assault on women's human rights during a decade
of conflict in Afghanistan and under the repressive rule of the Taliban.
Afghan women are likely to face further suffering at the hands of warring
factions and to endure some of the most serious humanitarian consequences
of the U.S.-led military action. HRW urges the international community
to protect women's rights during the conflict and include full respect
and protection for women's human rights as an integral part of any post-conflict
reconstruction in Afghanistan. View the report online at http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/afghan3/ |
